Texas Rangers' Hopes for the Second Half
As the all-star break comes to a close, the Texas Rangers have a 48-49 won-loss record, putting them 3.5 games out of a wildcard spot. While this is certainly a disappointment, they haven't been a bad team this year, and certainly have some time to turn their season around. However, in order to keep their playoff hopes alive, a few things need to go right for Texas.
The Lineup Needs To Return To Form
It is no secret that the Rangers' offense has been vastly underperforming this season, but let us not forget that it's largely the same lineup that led the team to the World Championship only two years ago, with a couple key additions. If Josh Jung finds his footing in AAA in time for a call-up and Wyatt Langford lives up to his true ability, Texas could once again sport one of the deadliest lineups in the game. With a hot start to the second half, they could potentially hang onto Adolis Garcia and start building at the deadline.
The Team Needs To Get Healthy
If the Rangers can receive players back from the injured list and keep them healthy, then that will instantly boost their playoff odds. Starter Jon Gray is set to return from a forearm injury after one more rehab start, and veteran slugger Jake Burger should return in a couple weeks. If the team makes a run once they return, then Tyler Mahle and Joc Pederson could return just in time for a stretch run.
The Bullpen Needs A Consistent Closer
While the bullpen has been perhaps the greatest asset to the Rangers this season, there is a lack of structure in the late innings. With the departure of Kirby Yates, Texas has been operating without a set closer, and their team leader in saves is Luke Jackson with nine, who has been decidedly bad this year (2-5 record, 4.45 ERA, 23:18 K-BB). With the many star infielders in their farm system, Texas could deal for a closer from a noncontending team, such as David Bednar of the Pirates or Mason Miller of the A's, solidifying the final cog in what could be a nearly flawless pen.
